Sweating is the body’s way to regulate temperature and to maintain a healthy balance during times of illness, when exercising and as the weather dictates.  Excessive under arm sweating  (axillary hyperhidrosis) means that you sweat a lot more than most people, even if you are not hot or generating additional body temperature.

Excessive under arm sweating  is an extremely common problem, affecting at least 3% of the western world’s population. As well as being upsetting, it can cause serious problems of confidence in people’s lives, as they struggle to cope. It can effect how people interact in social situations, choose what clothes to wear and decide whether or not they participate in sports. The condition is, however, very treatable.

Excessive sweating can be classified in two ways: Focal or generalized. It is important to know which type you have as the causes and treatments are very different. You should visit your physician for a thorough examination and diagnosis to discuss your symptoms in detail to better understand your condition and the appropriate treatments available.

Generalized excessive sweating  is when the production of sweat is increased over the entire body. Less common than focal excessive sweating it is often the result of an existing medical condition. Causes can include reactions to drugs – particularly antidepressants, thyroid gland over activity and certain types of cancer.

Focal excessive sweating  is when the over-production of sweat occurs in a concentrated area, Other other areas of the body can be affected, but most common is with the under arm, or axillae. Whilst the exact cause is unclear, studies do show heightened activity of sweat glands in sufferers. Research also suggests some genetic links. Affecting an equal numer of men and women, it tends to develop in the mid to late twenties, but can be connected to changes in the body throughout adolescence and start as early as infancy in the most extreme cases.

Some factors will increase the issue, as sweating would be increased in those who do not suffer. If you are experiencing excessive under arm sweating, you could try cutting down on spicy food and caffeine. Panic attacks and anxiety will also have an effect, as will exposure to increased heat.

Treating focal excessive sweating, can be undertaken in a manner of ways. There are strong antiperspirants available that are proven to control the problem quite effectively. Using an aluminum salt, they essentially prevent the sweat gland from producing perspiration. Occasionally known to cause mild irritation, some may not find these easy to get along with.

Other products are available, including pads that are easily applied to clothing to a soak up excessive sweat production. These have improved considerably in quality over the years, but some may still find the uncomfortable and unappealing.

If symptoms continue or worsen for an extended period of time, your physician may refer you on to a Dermatologist for further treatment that could include electrical therapy treatment, minor surgery or injections to help alleviate the issues.
